Not Made in a Factory. Made for a Family.
Most companies sell a product. We’re selling a set of very important values that just happens to be wrapped in a Crash Bag.
The families buying from us aren’t simply looking for the cheapest Crash Bag. They’re buying trust. They’re buying care. They’re buying from people who genuinely understand what it’s like to have a child who needs sensory regulation.
Why Don’t We Simply Make Them Overseas?
People sometimes ask why we don’t just outsource the manufacturing of our Crash Bags overseas.
The answer is simple. Because that’s not who we are.
Our values are old-school. The love and energy that go into your Crash Bag before it gets to your home matter, every step of the way.
At a surface level, it matters. It means we can check every seam, inspect every zip and make sure each bag is filled with just the right amount and mix of foam so that it feels right for our sensory humans.
At a values level, it matters. It means we can employ local families and people with disabilities on our Crash Bag team, who become part of our SSH family and gain a wonderful sense of family and belonging. It also means we can rescue materials that may otherwise become waste.
At an energetic level, it matters. Most importantly, it means we never lose sight of the child and family waiting at the other end.
For us, that matters more.
Every Crash Bag story begins long before it reaches your home, classroom or therapy space.
We rescue foam offcuts from Australian mattress manufacturers that may otherwise become waste. We reuse sturdy produce boxes from local grocery stores to help protect Crash Bags during delivery.
Our custom vacuum-packing equipment was designed and built using recycled timber and steel, creative thinking and plenty of divergent thinking. Even our packing tape is biodegradable.
These decisions may seem small individually, but together they reflect the kind of business we want to be.
Thoughtful. Resourceful. Kind to people and gentler on the planet.
Could we manufacture overseas? Absolutely.
It would be cheaper to make. It may increase our profit margin, in theory. But we’d lose something much more important.
Why the Crash Bag Journey Matters
Every Crash Bag has a story.
Step 1: Rescue Materials
Foam offcuts are collected and given a new purpose. Even our packing boxes and materials are pre-loved and re-purposed!
Step 2: Hand-Cut
Our big hand-sized chunks of foam filling are collected, cut and ripped by real people, not an automated production line. Our team know first-hand that the right blend matters... some pieces are big, some are small, some are squishy, some are firm.... so that when someone lies on the crash bag they really get to experience all of the different feels as they sink into it.
Step 3: Handmade
The Crash Bags are individually filled with care and attention to ensure each one has just the right amount of filling and just the right mix of different densities, shapes and sizes, to create the supportive, marshmallow-like landing our Crash Bags are known for.
Step 4: Hand-packed
Each individual Crash Bag is packed into a bag by our team so it can be vacuumed down to size. Turns out... squashing a Crash Bag into a box for posting is really tricky! So we used our divergent thinking to problem-solve and built our own equipment to compress Crash Bags into boxes so that they can be posted to their new families everywhere.
Step 5: Every Bag Is Checked
Seams, zips, filling and finishes are inspected before the Crash Bag leaves us.
Step 6: Sent with Love
Our Crash Bags are sent all around Australia, including to rural and remote locations for a fixed price to ensure they are accessible to more Aussies.
From rescued foam to a safe place to land, every order becomes part of a much bigger story.
Why Handmade Matters
Handmade is sometimes interpreted as simply meaning more expensive.
To us, handmade means something very different.
It means someone knew that a child would soon be jumping, crashing, resting or regulating on it. That someone cared enough not to take shortcuts. Instead, we:
-
Checked every seam.
-
Inspected every zip.
-
Filled and adjusted the bag by hand.
-
Noticed when something needed more attention.
...because we know who is waiting at the other end.
A child ❤️
