NDIS Update
We have spoken directly with the Legislation Team at the NDIS and after reviewing our Crash Bag product they have said that it can be purchased using funding only if:
This is because our Crash Bag is considered specialised sensory equipment and is not considered a type of beanbag or mat and therefore would not be classified as a "standard household item" or "standard furniture". This means that there should be no need to submit a ‘replacement support’ application for this product in order to use NDIS funding as long as the above criteria are met.
Most other similar products on the market in Australia are marketed to all households and contain crushed or crumbed foam, and are therefore more of a 'lounger'. Whereas our Crash Bag was designed with an Occupational Therapist in 2017 to be used specifically by children and teens with Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder as a behaviour modification and sensory regulation product. As it contains a generous amount of large pieces of hand-cut foam (of various densities and sizes), they have been found by Occupational Therapists to have a significant therapeutic benefit. It has been reported that they provide essential deep touch pressure (proprioception) and vestibular input which helps the user feel more calm and organised, be able to focus better, and cope better with sensory overwhelm or over-stimulation. This means the user has a better chance at working towards their goals (like independence and social connection in the community), and at having a better quality of life.
It is important that participants refer back to their Occupational Therapist if they are unsure, as this is general information only and does not consider the specific needs and goals of the individual participant.
