My baby knows me so well... and loves me just the way I am.
Can you see the special badge she made me this morning?
It’s a little folded piece of pink paper.
When we were getting ready today, she quietly handed it to me — proud smile on her face, love in her heart.
Then she paused. “No, that’s no good,” she said thoughtfully.
“Wait there.”
Off she ran, then came back with sticky tape, and gently taped it to my chest.
“It might not stick very well…
but if we don’t tape it there
you might not see it… or you might lose it…
or forget where you put it...
and then you might forget what day it is.
Will that work okay?”
I gave her the biggest, squeeziest hug.
Then we found a little badge to pin it in place — just to be sure.
The note said "It's gymnastics day".
You see, last Thursday was only our second week of gymnastics, after what felt like FOREVER on the waitlist.
And I forgot.
She remembered.
But I forgot. 😢
She didn’t get mad.
She didn’t shame me.
She didn’t give me "well-meaning" tips
or advice about how to remember things...
or how to adjust better to change....
or tell me I should try harder.
She actually said, “That’s okay, Mum. It worked out well! They cooked my FAVOURITE food at after-school care. It was delicious! We can just go next week.”
This Autistic/ADHD Mummy finds changes in routine tricky.
My neurodivergent brain forgets new or ad hoc plans.... a lot.
She knows this. She lives it herself.
So this morning, she made me a colourful, beautiful, practical reminder.
The simplest, most effective tool I’ve EVER been given.
And I wore it with pride.
To Pilates...
To work!
To the shops!
And guess what?... We made it to gymnastics today 🎉
We took these photos to send to Nanny (my Mum) — because Nanny gets the true significance of this.
But I wanted to be brave and share this story with our Sensory Super Heroes tribe too — because I have a feeling many of you will appreciate it.
Our kids have so much to teach us.
About friendship.
About how to be loving and creative and courageous and kind.
I’m learning from the best. 💖
